Update on Action Research Plan
I began working on my action research plan in August of 2012. I identified five students of low socioeconomic status from diverse backgrounds to assist in this project. The students chosen were from low income homes with minimalor no support. I began by obtaining the students current DRA level, testing level of vocabulary and obtaining knowledge of the students phonological awareness. After obtaining all of this information I entered my data in to chart dog so that I could create a baseline for these students. This above information would assist me in seeing where these students were at so that I could see their growth.
This particular year we purchased class i pads and iPods. This allowed me to find apps that students could use in assisting them with vocabulary , reading and comprehension. As a team we put our stories from our basal readers on the I pods. These were then placed in a center where students could listen to the story and follow along. This would help my struggling readers be able to listen to the story without struggling to read. The I pods were a big hit and the students did very well at comprehending what they were hearing. The students also began using the i pads to create their own storybooks. This would help with the vocabulary along with the wordle program I was using. On the computer students would type their words in the wordle program , this allowed repetitiveness and identification of letters.
As the year progressed we continued these activities and I continued to monitor growth. At mid year 3 of the five students were showing tremendous growth. The students that were not were taken to a STAT meeting where all data was looked at and decisions were made to place them in a Title 1 class. Although I have completed my research I do not have all final data but I am working on that now. A new year has begun so I will be checking on these students to see what growth they continue to make.
